Satu Makeda – October 2011

SATU MAKEDA OCTOBER 2011 HOT CHICK OF THE MONTH

Satu Runa - October 2011Being that Smartasses Magazine is headquartered on the beautiful shores of downtown Dublin, Ohio, it’s no secret that most of our staff grew up as Cleveland Browns fans. With that said, it’s definitely no secret that we rarely care what any member of the Baltimore Ravens does. But Ravens Linebacker Terrell Suggs does more than make life for those of us in the Dawg Pound miserable, he also makes films, and our featured gal for October 2011 just happens to be in his latest one, The Coalition.

There’s a good chance you caught the snippet about the film on ESPN2 a little over a week ago, and if so, you also saw our current model for Autumn’s alpha-month, Satu Runa, who plays the strong supporting character of ‘Mira’ in the film co-written by Suggs and Monica Mingo. She may not be the actual face that launched 1,000 ships… but she was gorgeous enough to play her on stage, and we guarantee it was more than one thousand fanboys who voted her as the “Official Geek Honey of the Month” on blogzarro.com in May of 2007, and the Hottest Canadian on hottestcanadian.com in March 2006.

However, if you know our guitar, piano and violin playing Miss October, you probably saw her as a host on the short lived show Fangoria TV, or on Dawson’s Creek singing with her shock-punk band, Straight Razor Seduction. Says Runa, “We shot on the same set as the club scene in the first Crow movie. I’m a huge Crow fan, so I was super psyched to be there!”

Satu also isn’t kidding when she talks about a love for comic books. In addition to being a fan of The Crow, fanboys tend to drool on their pocket protectors just a tad when they find out that Runa also digs the highly acclaimed Caliber Press/Image Comics series Kabuki. But the thing that quite possibly fogs up those nerdy, horn-rimmed geek-glasses the most, is Satu’s world famous portrayal of the underground super heroine Captain Schoolgirlranked 37 on our list of the Top 50 Comic Book Babes Of All Time, who dons a mask and carries razor blade rulers to fight crime within the walls of Our Lady of Perpetual Bliss, and keeps corrupt teachers and classmates in check.

Regarding her unique name, Miss October opines, “I used to be called just “Satu” because my real last name is Rautaharju, and people have a hard time with it. Then I found “Makeda,” which I used to use, and is an alternate name to the Queen of Sheba (from the bible). I was looking for the name of an ancient queen, something that would reflect my appearance which is ambiguous. She was the ruler of Egypt, Persia, and Ethiopia. We don’t know where she comes from per se. Turns out, she and I have the same birthday, January fifth, so I had to go with her. My first name, Satu, is my real name. My father is from Finland, and my name comes from Lapland, the northernmost region of the country. It means “Fairytale,” and I love it. My mother’s side is 4 generations Trinidadian, and our ancestors are from India and Afghanistan. I fully intend on playing ancient queens, goddesses, and aliens several times in my career.”

Satu Runa - October 2011As far as dating goes, this covetable Capricorn feels that finding love is super tricky. “I think you must be willing to overlook a lot of flaws, or find the charm in them. One thing that most men get wrong right off the bat is timing. I find that they are always in a rush to get where they are going. The rewards would be much greater if they were simply patient!”

Currently, Miss October plays live music once a month at the Universal Bar & Grill just outside Universal City, California. With just herself and a guitar, in her Siouxsie-Sioux-meets-Mazzy-Star-ish eclectic kind of way, she plays both originals and 90’s rock covers alike. In addition to The Coalition, Satu is also currently shooting a psycho-horror film called 94, directed by Eli Roth’s Halloween Horror Night’s short film top ten finalist, Adrian Barrios. Says Satu, “Adrian is so modest. He’s got his own fanboy following because he draws Spiderman for Marvel. I’m hoping all of his fans and my fans will come together and see our film. It’s sick, twisted, and dark. Just the way I like it!” Regarding Suggs and The Coalition, Runa continues, “I’ve always been a huge hockey fan, but now I’m watching out for the Ravens to see how well Terrell is doing. He was so cool, and Monica the director is so fierce and fabulous. It was a great experience shooting on location in Phoenix with a fantastic cast and crew.”
