Sarah Dope – February 2015

SARAH DOPE FEBRUARY 2015 HOT CHICK OF THE MONTH

Sarah Dope Feb 2015While we exit one month where the names Juno, Kari, and Linus are on everyone’s lips, and enter a new one where the conversation turns to shadows in Pennsylvania and all things super, as luck would have it, we happen to know a very super gal whose name belongs on everyone’s lips… and definitely doesn’t belong in the shadows. Meet Sarah Dope, your Smartasses Magazine February 2015 Hot Chick of the Month. After hailing from Poplar Bluff, Missouri and spending time in Los Angeles, she now resides in the music city that is Minneapolis, Minnesota, and though it isn’t Punxsutawney, it goes without saying that when you’re trudging through the frozen tundra that is the Land of 10,000 Lakes, one certainly has a vested interest in whether or not that little groundhog named Phil sees his shadow or not.

Although Sarah likes to wear many hats (photography, modeling, code & design, etc), for the past fifteen months she’s been exclusively working social media and digital marketing for the Mill City music label, Rhymesayers. Handling the social production for their annual hip hop festival Soundset, if you want to catch our February L’Étoile du Nord there, you’ll most likely locate her on the production trailer requesting snacks over the walkie-talkie. If you do attempt to bend her ear though, you’ll need to move quickly, as even she never knows when modeling or photography may jump back onto the playbook of her jacquie-of-all-trades journey. As for her spare time, this Taurus enjoys reading books, usually written by Neil Gaiman, and playing first person shooter video games like Call of Duty, though she admittedly is typically willing to give every type of game a try.

As far as dating goes, Sarah states, “I choose to stay single these days, mostly because I’m a workaholic and it’s difficult to find someone who can truly understand that.” However, she also puts some of the blame on boys with bad pickup lines. “If the very first thing you say to me is ‘A-YO… What do I gotta do to get your number?’ you’re definitely starting off on the wrong foot with me. At least try to have some sort of conversation with me first. Also some dudes seem to not understand that asking a girl what type of Asian she is, and then following it with ‘That works’ isn’t a compliment.” Not so surprisingly though, when Sarah does find herself cartelling with the opposite sex, she suggests that “it’s almost always over comics, games, music, and art. I also prefer my guys to be passionate about something. It doesn’t even have to be something that I understand. Just prove to me that you actually care about something in life and have goals for yourself, other than sitting on a couch and rotting away.”

Sarah Dope Feb 2015So what is Dope’s “dope”? Well, despite being Miss February, it certainly isn’t St. Valentine’s Day. “I don’t really believe in Valentine’s Day, even the years I’ve had a boyfriend during it. I don’t like Hallmark telling me what day to tell my significant other that I love them. I usually use the day as an excuse to watch horror movies and spend time with my one true love– food. I love food. Like. LOOOOOVE food. I have my three main meals of the day, then multiple snack times in between each all day and night. While my metabolism is still a machine, I’m going to take full advantage of it. If I’m backstage at a show, while most girls try banging rock stars, I’m too busy scoping out what snacks they have and figuring out how much of it I can take.”

20 Questions with Sarah Dope – Miss February 2015

Sarah Dope Feb 20151- The worst advice my mother ever gave me was: Now that I’m all grown up, I don’t think my mother has ever given me any bad advice. Even when I was a kid and digital work was still new, sure, my parents didn’t understand it. They still somewhat supported me, but I’d get lectures about how I needed to go after a “real job”. but that only motivated me more to prove them wrong. Now we all just laugh about it.

2- The last good movie I watched was: Gone Girl.

3- My favorite pig out food is: If we’re talking snacks, puppy chow. If we’re talking “real food”, sushi.

4- My favorite actress is: Angelina Jolie has always been my favorite. It’s a stereotypical girl answer, I know. I’ve also been really impressed with Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson lately.

4.2 – My favorite actor is: Brad Pitt. Again, probably a stereotypical girl answer, especially when I list my favorite actress as being Angelina Jolie, but I remember always liking him as a kid and continuing to enjoy his work now. I’m also a big fan of Kevin Spacey. I can’t think of a bad role he’s ever done.

5- My favorite childhood memory is: Building forts and tree houses in the woods with two of my best friends. We used to pretend we lived in the wild and relied on nature. Also playing (and beating) Contra over and over and over. Because somehow that never got old back then.

6- My favorite bands are: I don’t even know where to begin. There’s so many and I love most of them. Metallica (up until the Load/Reload era. Started going downhill after that), Atmosphere, Five Finger Death Punch, P.O.S, Steve Aoki, Placebo.

Sarah Dope Feb 20157- My most prized possession is: I have three of them. Two are books: One is a book on my grandmother who passed away a few years ago. She was still considered royalty in Thailand, so it was an ordeal. The book went over her history and our family’s history. It’s pretty cool. The other is the limited edition 7 Years with Atmosphere and Rhymesayers book. All photography was done by Dan Monick and it has commentary from the OG’s of Rhymesayers about each photo memory. It also includes To All My Friends on vinyl. Really awesome concept. It was gifted to me from the Rhymesayers dudes a couple of years before I went to go work for them directly. The third item is my VIP pass into NASA in Cape Canaveral, FL.

8- My most major accomplishment: Getting the hell out of my hometown. That might not sound like much, but that place was/is a creative suckhole. I grew tired of a town who told me what I could and could not do, so as soon as I graduated high school, I packed my bags and left to begin my journey to do everything they said I couldn’t do. I’ve worked for all kinds of musicians and celebrities, have had photo work on marquees and billboards and in magazines– all while still rocking “crazy” hair colors and styles and listening to Marilyn Manson– something that my hometown just found so scandalous in the 90’s.

9- My personal heroes are: My mother. Such an incredibly strong woman and she’s put up with my crap for all of these years.

10- I’d give anything to: To be able to travel the world and not have to worry about finances.

Sarah Dope Feb 2015 (Photo by Vanity Driven)11- I’ve never been able to: See above. I’ve also never been able to swallow pills. They just don’t go down, or they don’t stay down. It’s a psychological thing.

12- The worst part of my job is: That I can’t convince my bosses that we need to build a cereal bar in the space.

13- My fantasy is: Again, I’d love to be able to travel the world. I’d love to not have to worry about money or whether or not a place would have internet, pack my bags, and tell my colleagues, “Peace y’all! I’ll be working from Hawaii, the Bahamas, Japan, Thailand, Egypt, Paris, London, Italy, etc for the rest of the year!”

14- The one thing I cannot stand in people is: Dishonesty. A lot of problems can actually be resolved if everyone was just honest with one another, no matter how awkward the conversation may start. Also, I can’t stand people who can’t chew their food with their mouth closed and smack. Used to live with someone with that problem. Drove me NUTS.

15- If I could change one thing about myself, it would be: Hmm. I’m not sure. I’m pretty happy with myself. I’m not “perfect” by any means, but I also don’t believe “perfect” exists. I guess I’d like to change my (lack of) motivation to go to a gym and work out?

Sarah Dope Feb 2015 (Art by Nicky Gwiggs)16- My most embarrassing moment was: Shortly after I first moved to Minneapolis, I went to go see my friends in Get Cryphy perform at one of their monthly nights. Well, I might’ve gotten TOO cryphy and spent the car ride from the venue to the after-party asking my friend to pull over about seven times so I could puke. We all laugh about it every month, and I always point out that at least I was polite enough to ask her to pull over so I could puke OUTSIDE of her car rather than ending up puking INSIDE her car.

17- Nobody knows I am: I really don’t know the answer to this one. I’ve pretty much been putting my life out on the Internet for many, many years now and I don’t really hide anything.

18- My friends like me because: I’m loyal. I’m honest. I try to speak my mind as much as possible. As much as I always say that I’m too jaded, I do have a heart somewhere buried under all of the charcoal and brick walls.

19- Behind my back they say: Well, I should hope that my real friends aren’t saying anything behind my back that they haven’t already said to my face. I can often be very cold and distant when I’m upset with someone. An ice queen. Some of my friends think it’s a little harsh. I call it a defense mechanism.

20- My favorite color is: Black, black, and BLACK!! But since that’s technically not a color, blue would be next in line.
